Study Shows More US Residents Know that Online Gambling is Legal

It has been a common misconception for years among gamblers in the United States that online casino gambling is illegal.

However, the results of a new study were recently released, stating that these days more and more United States residents are aware that gambling on the Internet is not actually illegal.

The study, which was conducted by Ipsos Reid and reported in the Toronto Sun, showed that in the last three years the number of American citizens who thought there was a federal law banning online casino gambling has dropped four percent. Three years ago, in 2007, 41% of US residents surveyed believed that Internet gambling was illegal. However, this year only 37% of those surveyed thought there was a law against gambling online.

In actuality, there is no federal law banning online gambling in the United States. Anti-gambling legislation such as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 do not outlaw gambling, but rather place restrictions upon payment methods at online gambling sites. There are still many online casinos that offer service to US players.

The study also reported that more than half of United States residents would prefer that the government regulate online casino gaming in the US. 55% were for federal regulation while the other 45% were for each state coming up with its own rules to govern online casino gaming. With more citizens learning about the legality of online casino gaming, as well as more proponents for government regulation it will be interesting to see how online gambling legislation shapes up over 2010.
