The June 11, 2023, By Jerry K. Polak

Tensions run high in Massachusetts as Senators got an earful from both sides of the heated casino debate on the perils and merits of casinos before they vote later this month on a bill to legalize casinos in Massachusetts. online casino news: Massachusetts Senators get into heated debate on the perils and merits of casinos

Robert J. Hayes, rough talking President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO urged lawmakers to connect with the will of the people, and disregards the elites, who seek to produce statistic after statistic to make casino seem like a bad idea for the State. On the other side of the debate, Matthew C. Patrick, whose father was addicted to gambling, said of the proposal ““We’re destroying families,’’ Patrick said, on the verge of tears. “Don’t forget that.’ The debate comes at an interesting intersection in the long running debate on casinos in Beacon hill.

In April, the State Legislature passed a bill to legalize two casinos as well as slot machines at the state’s two horse tracks and two former dog tracks. The Governer of Massachusetts supported these and other casinos, but not placing slot machines at the tracks.

Many on both sides of the debate have said that the momentum has shifted in favor of legalizing casinos. Lawmakers, hoping to get back some of the budgets lost to a shattering recession, have said that they believe casinos would help recapture some one billion dollars spent each year by Massachusetts gamblers each year.

Yesterday’s debate was a chance for both sides to hear the other’s arguments before voting later on this month.
