IPBA 2010 Pte , on behalf of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association conferenhce is asking the Singapore high court to assess damages for misrepresentation, breach of contract and Marina Bay Sands Pte’s conduct. The case counters the casinos lawsuit of unpaid bills. The Sands casino, controlled by billionaire Sheldon Adelson promised that the resort would be an “iconic venue” and would offer full facilities and unparalleled elegance. However, the organizers of the conference complained of power outages during speeches, unfinished rooms and lost luggage.

Delegates at the conference told of unsightly pails placed in the hotel atrium, placed there to catch water from leaks in the ceiling. Some guests had to be sheltered by umbrellas when checking in. Still others were locked inside their rooms because of malfunctioning keys and locks. All in all, not a good beginning for what was supposed to be the most exclusive casino of the East.

According to the suit, the casino used the conference to its full commercial benefit and to speed up the temporary occupation benefit and casino license, obtained only days before the conference began. In addition, Marina Sand threatened to jeopardize the conference and to withhold services unless the casino was paid in full. As a result, three checks were handed over to the casino “under duress,” with two of the checks later being cancelled by the bar association, based in Tokyo.
