Debate Over Gambling Casino Built in Gettysburg Sparks Controversy

The July 01, 2023, By Jerry K. Polak

Historical musings about the most terrible and bloodiest battle in the Civil War and concerns over gambling intersected yesterday at the Massachusetts Senate, in what seemed like a timed and ever poetic proclamation. online casino news: Debate Over Gambling Casino Built in Gettysburg Sparks Controversy

On the eve of the Battle of Gettysburg’s 147 year anniversary, a prominent group of historians sent a letter to the Pennsylvania gaming control board, stressing that the proposed gambling casino to be erected near the fabled battleground will conflict with the area’s historical significance, and irrevocably change the face of the district.

Urging the Chairman of the board to deny the proposed casino’s application, the letter kindled the debate between preservationists and gambling casino supporters that ignited in 2005, when another application for a casino was put forth to the Board.

According to the letter, building a casino would be an insult to the brave men and women who died there. Some 160,000 Union and Confederate soldiers fought in the battle, out which a staggering 50,000 died at the Battle of Gettysburg, the largest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It started on today's date in 1863 and ended on July 3.

"The idea of a gambling casino on or even near [the battleground] is totally incompatible with the nature of that historic site, which is special and unique," Dr. McPherson said. "A casino can be put anywhere, but there's only one Gettysburg." Historians claim the battle was pivotal in the Civil War, not only because of the number of lives lost, but also because four months later, Lincol was to utter his famous “Gettysburg address” there, at the dedication of a national cemetery for the fallen.

If granted a state license, Mason-Dixon Resorts & Casino will be at the existing Eisenhower Hotel & Conference Center in Cumberland Township.
