New Battle Waged in Gettysburg Centered around Gambling Casinos

Massachusetts lawmakers enamored of the idea of a multi-billion dollar revenue cash cow in the form of a casino, are having a hard time justifying the 24 hour world of smoke, free booze and other questionable practices prevalent on casinos, especially to the state’s Puritan roots and high-minded liberal reputation.

During the recent debate on casinos in the House and State Senate, legislators have debated all kinds of restrictions to be placed on casinos, from bans on smoking and free drinks to limits on hour a single person can withdraw from the ATM machines, midnight closing times, warning labels on slot machines, and close scrutiny from public health counselors for gamblers who have spent too much time feeding quarters into slots. And a trans fat food ban.

For casino supporters, this is only more proof that Massachusetts is trying to live up to its reputation as a nanny state, with too much governmental interference into the lives of its residents. They say a politically correct online casino is impossible, and should not even be discussed. By their very nature, casinos have some elements that will make people feel uncomfortable, and it is far from being a “family” pastime.

However, opponents of casinos are not willing to give up hard earned ground, especially when it comes to hard-fought public health victories, such as a ban on smoking in public places and a prohibition on bars and restaurants giving out free drinks or selling them at a discount. Casinos are no exception.
